Local Backtester
The Local Backtester is a standalone Docker-based application that runs on your own machine. Unlike the chart-based backtester built into Crodl's trading terminal, the Local Backtester is designed for heavy-duty strategy testing — parameter sweeps, multi-market analysis, and large-scale optimization.
Local Backtester vs Chart Backtester
| Feature | Chart Backtester | Local Backtester |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on | Crodl servers | Your machine (Docker) |
| Best for | Quick single backtests | Parameter sweeps & optimization |
| Data source | Chart data | Downloaded exchange data |
| Multi-market | No | Yes — sweep across exchanges, symbols, bars |
| Parameter sweeps | No | Yes — grid search across parameter ranges |
| Speed | Shared resources | Uses your full CPU |
| Privacy | Strategy runs on server | Strategy runs locally |
| Availability | All members (built into the terminal) | Lifetime members |
How It Works
The Local Backtester runs as a Docker container on your machine. It provides a web interface at http://localhost:8888 where you can:
- Download historical data from supported exchanges
- Write strategies using Rune Script (same language as the chart backtester)
- Run single backtests with detailed equity curves, drawdown charts, and trade analysis
- Run parameter sweeps — test thousands of parameter combinations in parallel
- View and compare results with ranked results tables (by PnL % or ROI $) and performance metrics
Requirements
- Docker Desktop installed on your machine
- Lifetime membership on Crodl
- Backtester token from your Crodl account settings
